Poisson noise removal from high-resolution STEM images based on periodic block matching

چکیده
Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) provides sub-ångstrom, atomic resolution images of crystalline structures. However, in many applications, the ability to extract information such as atom positions, from such electron micrographs, is severely obstructed by low signal-to-noise ratios of the acquired images resulting from necessary limitations to the electron dose. We present a denoising strategy tailored to the special features of atomic-resolution electron micrographs of crystals limited by Poisson noise based on the block-matching and 3D-filtering (BM3D) algorithm by Dabov et al. We also present an economized block-matching strategy that exploits the periodic structure of the observed crystals. On simulated single-shot STEM images of inorganic materials, with incident electron doses below 4 C/cm2, our new method achieves precisions of 7 to 15 pm and an increase in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 15 to 20 dB compared to noisy images and 2 to 4 dB compared to images denoised with the original BM3D.

High-Angle Annular Darkfield Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF-STEM) allows to take images at atomic scale with a contrast proportional to the atomic number. STEM acquires an image line-by-line, pixel-by-pixel leading to characteristic distortions. Furthermore, STEM images of beam sensitive materials have to be taken with short exposure times, leading to low contrast images with ...

Introduction: An efficient method of tomographic imaging in nuclear medicine is positron emission tomography (PET). Compared to SPECT, PET has the advantages of higher levels of sensitivity, spatial resolution and more accurate quantification. However, high noise levels in the image limit its diagnostic utility. Noise removal in nuclear medicine is traditionally based on Fourier decomposition o...

Along with commercial accessibility of high resolution satellite images in recent decades, the issue of extracting accurate 3D spatial information in many fields became the centre of attention and applications related to photogrammetry and remote sensing has increased. To extract such information, the images should be geo-referenced. The procedure of georeferencing is done in four main steps...

License plate recognition (LPR) by digital image processing, which is widely used in traffic monitor and control, is one of the most important goals in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). In real ITS, the resolution of input images are not very high since technology challenges and cost of high resolution cameras. However, when the license plate image is taken at low resolution, the license...

Super-resolution (SR) aims to overcome the ill-posed conditions of image acquisition. SR facilitates scene recognition from low-resolution image(s). Generally assumes that high and low resolution images share similar intrinsic geometries. Various approaches have tried to aggregate the informative details of multiple low-resolution images into a high-resolution one. In this paper, we present a n...
